Drobot was a member of the swimming and diving teams in 1973, 1975 and 1976, missing the 1974 season because of injury. He was named to the all-conference Diving Team each year he competed and was named an NAIA All-American in 1975 after placing fourth in the 3-meter springboard event at the national swimming and diving meet. In 1976, he was the conference champion in the 1- and 3-meter springboard events and set the conference 3-meter springboard record. That season he was named an NAIA All-American for his fourth-place finish in the 1-meter springboard event and his third-place ranking in the 3-meter springboard event. The same year he also competed as a pole vaulter for the university track team.
After earning his bachelor's degree in 1977 in geology, Drobot continued his studies at UW-Superior. He volunteered his time during the 1980s to serve as diving coach for Superior Senior High School and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He became president and chief executive officer of RJD Consulting Inc.
