In the late 1970s, few hockey players in the country had the impact on the game that Thomas Doig had. As a forward on the Yellowjacket hockey team, Doig had the ability to change games and displayed an offensive prowess that few have shown in the history of Yellowjacket hockey.
A native of Duluth, Minn., Doig came to UW-Superior in 1976 when the program was coming off of its first-ever national championship. He would spend the next four years becoming one of the all-time greatest players in school history. As a sophomore and junior, he led the Yellowjackets in scoring and tied for second as a senior, just one point off the team lead.
Doig finished his Yellowjacket career among the all-time leading scorers, and more than 30 years after his graduation he still ranks in the top 10 all-time in goals (8th with 68), assists (6th with 96) and points (6th with 164). He led the Yellowjackets in scoring as a sophomore and a junior and was a three-time all-conference selection (1977-78, 1978-79, 1979-80) in the International Collegiate Hockey Association (ICHA). Also during his junior season, Doig earned NAIA All-American honors.
During his senior season, Doig was named the team captain of the Yellowjackets and helped the team reach the NAIA tournament, where they finished third. Doig was the leading scorer in the tournament and took home all-tournament team honors.
Doig's son Alec was a member of the UWS men's hockey team from 2011-14, making the Doigs the first father-son combination to ever play for the Yellowjackets.
Following graduation in 1980, Thomas Doig moved into the teaching and coaching professions and he just recently retired from his position as a principal in the New Prague, Minn., school district.
