Northeastern Minnesota has seen its share of great hockey coaches, and without a doubt one of the first that comes to mind is Bruce Plante, who in his second tenure at Hermantown High School has turned the Hawks into a powerhouse, who makes regular appearances in the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. With his contributions to youth and high school sports in the Arrowhead, Mr. Plante enters the UW-Superior Hall of Fame as a recipient of the Mertz Mortorelli Coaching Achievement Award.

Following a playing career as a goaltender with the Yellowjacket hockey team, Mr. Plante graduated in 1973 and embarked on a coaching and teaching career in Minnesota. Mr. Plante guided the Hermantown Hawks to 13 state tournament berths, three titles and 547 victories during his career. He retired in 2017 after 28 seasons.
