Arthur "Art" Nelson was an outstanding athlete at UW-Superior from 1961 to 1963, leading the Yellowjacket basketball team during one of its most successful seasons.
A noted high school athlete in Superior, Mr. Nelson enrolled at UW-Superior in 1960 and earned the role of starting defensive back for the Yellowjacket football team. He truly made his mark, however, in basketball.During the 1960-'61 season, he served as the team's co-captain as its members compiled a 15-6 record that put them second in the Wisconsin State College Conference. Mr. Nelson finished fourth in the conference in scoring with 19.1 points per game. He was a first team All-Conference selection as well as a first-team selection for the Collegiate All State Basketball Team.The Yellowjackets were chosen to compete in the Mid West Regional NCAA Tournament, in which Mr. Nelson was named to the All-Tournament Team.
During the 1961-62 season, Mr. Nelson again was named co-captain of the basketball team. Despite missing part of the season with a broken arm, he led the team in scoring average, was among the leading scorers in the conference, and was named to the All-Conference team.
