University of Wisconsin-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame
One of the most recognizable faces at sporting events throughout Superior, whether it is on the sidelines or in the stands is that of Bernie Tomzak. A Superior native and a coaching veteran, Mr. Tomzak enters the UW-Superior Hall of Fame as a recipient of the Mertz Mortorelli Coaching Achievement Award in 2013.
Mr. Tomzak played four seasons of basketball at UW-Superior and graduated in 1958. For the next 32 years, Mr. Tomzak was a teacher and a coach, spending time in the Woodville, Wisconsin and Superior school districts. He coached numerous sports during his tenure, and at one time guided a team to the Little League World Series.
At Superior High School, Mr. Tomzak coached golf, basketball and baseball and later held the position of athletic director, a post he remained in until his retirement. In addition to coaching and teaching, Mr. Tomzak spent 28 years as a high school basketball official, and on several occasions was selected to officiate in the state basketball tournament.
Even in retirement, Mr. Tomzak still continues to serve in a coaching capacity with many teams in Superior and is a regular at Yellowjacket sporting events.
Away from the gym and field, Mr. Tomzak has been a volunteer mentor for students at Superior Middle School, helping kids create flower boxes for the Golden Living Center in Superior. He also remains active as a volunteer at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Superior.
